Women’s Lacrosse Opens 2014 Season at Bryant on Friday

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team kicks off the 2014 season on Friday at Bryant (2-0). The opening draw control is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

John Battaglino’s squad welcomes back 10 starters and 14 letterwinners after reaching the America East semifinals a year ago. The 2014 Great Danes return an experienced defense, midfield and their primary draw control specialist, Kathleen Lennon.

UAlbany and Bryant met last season at John Fallon Field, with the Purple & Gold taking a 15-4 win to start the season 2-1. The Bulldogs dropped to 1-2 with the loss. Allie Phelan scored three goals in that game, while Rachel Bowles, Nichole Eamer, Maureen Keggins and Ariana Parker tallied one apiece. The Great Danes had a 14-7 advantage in draw controls as well as seven free position shots to Bryant’s two.

The Bulldogs (2-0) beat Holy Cross 8-7 in overtime to open their season, and downed Siena 11-7 on Tuesday. Bryant will play its only home game in eight games against the Great Danes, and plays five straight on the road for the month of March.

Lauren Descalzo leads the Bulldogs with six goals, including five against Siena. Bryant returns six of its top 10 scorers from 2013, and is led by nine seniors. The Bulldogs were tabbed to finish first in the NEC after falling to Monmouth in the league championship last season.

Bryant head coach Jill DePetris-Batcheller led the Bulldogs into the Division I ranks last season after serving at an assistant at Brown. In her second season, DePetris-Batcheller played at Syracuse, graduating in 2007, when Battaglino served as the offensive coordinator for the Orange.
