ALBANY, N.Y. — The University at Albany softball team dropped a doubleheader against Bryant University on Wednesday, April 10. UAlbany took a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning of game two but was answered with a three-run Bulldog rally in the 6-5 defeat. The Great Danes saw their Division I program-best 14 game win-streak come to halt in game one — losing 8-3.

Junior Brittany MacFawn had allowed only two runs over her last 27.1 innings pitched. She was finally answered today as Bryant (13-15, 4-6 NEC) scored eight runs off the Great Dane starter in game one. Four of the seven hits by the Bulldogs were home runs.

UAlbany (19-9, 6-0 AE) opened up the scoring as freshman Maggie Cocks hit an RBI single in the first inning. She drove-in freshman Annie Johnson, who stole her team-leading 22nd base of the season. Johnson came into the day with a .83 steals per game average, third best in all of Division I.

The Bulldogs responded with six runs over the fourth and fifth inning. Sophomore Madeline Velasquez highlighted the scoring with a grand slam in the fifth. As Bryant took the lead, it marked the first time the Great Danes were trailing at home all season.

UAlbany added two in the seventh off singles by junior Lauren Alcorn and sophomore Vicky McFarland followed by a throwing error. They could not however close the gap.

MacFawn (11-6) went the distance, striking out five and walking one. Brittany Hart (6-7) recorded the win for Bryant. She allowed seven hits, striking out five over seven innings.

In game two, UAlbany scored two runs in both the fourth and sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead heading into the final frame. They were led at the plate by Cocks, Alcorn and senior Kylie Apostolina. They each recorded two hits with Alcorn driving in a game-high two runs.

After scoring one in the third, the Great Danes added two more off a double by freshman Kelly Costello and sac-fly by sophomore Jess Tate. UAlbany took a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning as Alcorn hit a two-run single to right field.

The Great Danes were three outs away from splitting the two-game series. Bryant put together two straight walks to open up the seventh inning. Velasquez continued her hot day at the plate with a single to tie things up. One batter later, Apostolina was unable to field a throw to home as the Bulldogs scored the game-winning run.

UAlbany left base runners on first and second in their last at-bats as Bryant held on for the victory. The Great Danes outhit the Bulldogs, 9-3.

Junior Emily Ostrom’s (8-3) eight-game win streak was snapped. She went 6.1 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out two. Freshman Elle Madsen improved to 6-4 with a complete game effort.

UAlbany will host America East rival Stony Brook in a three-game series at Albany Field on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday April 14. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
