UAlbany Field Hockey Signs Six Student-Athletes for the 2013 Season

Albany, N.Y. — Six student-athletes will be joining the UAlbany field hockey program in the fall of 2013, as announced by Great Dane head coach Phil Sykes on Tuesday, April 9. Averill Erdody, Paula Heuser, Jaclyn Hibbs, Molly Mariano, Maxi Primus, and Taylor Schwoyer will all join the UAlbany program in hopes of leading the Great Danes to another America East Conference title.

“As a coaching staff, we are very excited about our incoming class,” said Sykes, who mentored his team to its third America East Conference Championship this past fall. “They will add a great deal of speed, toughness, and skill to an already experienced team. I see strength and depth added to every position on the field. I am most excited about the competitiveness of our incoming class – they all have a deep desire to succeed and you can see it in their play.”

Erdody is a goalkeeper hailing from Milford, N.H. She was a four-year letterwinner at Milford High School, and also competed for the Granite State Elite Field Hockey Club. For Milford, she was a Nashua Telegraph All-Star in 2010, 2011, and 2012, and was named the Player of the year by the publication as a senior. The team captain was also named to the New Hampshire Division II All-State team in 2012, and was a member of the Union Leader All-State Team. As a member of the Granite State Elite FHC from 2009-13, Erdody was an U19 Futures Level I National Championship selection in 2012. She was also a member of the basketball and softball teams as Milford, and is an honor student, who plans to major in communication.

Heuser will come to Albany from Monchengladbach, Germany. A midfielder, Heuser started playing field hockey at the age of seven at the Gladbacher Hockey and Tennis Club. A member of the Gladbacher Field Hockey Club, she was a member of the 2009 squad that won the German Indoor Championship. She was also a member of the U16 and U18 German National team from 2009-12, and was named the Athlete of the Year at her high school in 2009.

Hibbs is another midfielder, hailing from North Wales, Pa. She played scholastically for Wissahickon High School and has been a member of Xcalibur Field Hockey Club since 2011. Hibbs was a two-time NFHCA First-Team Pennsylvania selection and was also named to the All-Southeastern Pennsylvania First Team in 2011 and 2012. As a senior in 2012, she was a PFHCA First-Team All-State honoree, after being named to the second team in 2010. Hibbs helped lead Wissahickon to four straight Suburban One Conference Championships, and was named First Team All-League in the last three seasons. As a member of Xcaliber, Hibbs played for the 2012 National Indoor Tournament A Pool champions. She was also a member of the National Hockey Festival Champions from 2009-11 with Mystx Field Hockey Club. Hibbs was also a three-year letterwinner for the Wissahickon lacrosse team, and was a two-time All-League Third Team honoree.

Mariano hails from Harrisburg, Pa., and was a three-year letterwinner at Central Dauphin, while also playing for the Key State Field Hockey Club. The forward/midfielder led Central Dauphin to the 2011 PIAA Final Four, the Commonwealth Division Championship, and the Mid-Penn Championship as a junior. As a senior in 2012, Mariano’s squad won the Commonwealth Division Championship and was the Mid-Penn runner up. As a senior captain, Mariano was named to the Mid-Penn First Team and was an All-State Team Honorable Mention. She scored nine goals and handed out 17 assists as a senior. With Key State, Marino partipated in the National Indoor Tournament from 2008-13, and the National Field Hockey Festival in 2010 and 2011, helping to guide the team to the U16 championship in 2010. The team also played in the Disney Showcase from 2011-13, and won the U19 Minnie Pool Championship this spring. A member of the National Honor Society, Mariano is in the top five percent of her graduating class.

A native of Berlin, Germany, Maxi Primus is a goalkeeper who has played for Zehlendorfer Wespen Hockey Club. A four time Berlin Champion, she currently plays for 2008 Olympic Field Hockey Gold Medalist Florian Keller in the indoor first division and outdoor second division. In 2009-10, Primus played in four international matches with Germany’s U16 national team, and made two appearances in goal for Germany’s U18 national team in 2012-13.

The final member of the incoming class is a native of Telford, Pa. Schwoyer is a four-year letterwinner at Christopher Dock High School, and also plays midfield and defense for the High Styx Field Hockey Club. As a senior, she was named the Bicentennial League’s Most Valuable Player, and was and All-State First-Teamm AA honoree. She was named First-Team All-Bicentennial League in 2012 and 2011, and was a team captain in both of those seasons. She was a member of the Bicentennial League Championship team in 2009, and the program was a District 1 qualifier all four years of her career. With the High Styx team, Schwoyer has played in numerous National Indoor Tournaments and Outdoor Festivals, including a gold medal performance in 2011 and 2012 with the U19 squad. Schwoyer, who was a Pennsylvania All-Academic Team member in 2012, is a member of the National Honor Society. She is the second member of her family to play for the Great Danes, as older sister, Brianna, will be graduating this spring.
