ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior attack Ty Thompson had a career-day, scoring eight goals to reach the 100-goal plateau in a decisive 16-10 win over UMBC on Friday, April 19 at John Fallon Field. The Great Danes improve to 4-0 in conference play and clinch the No. 1 seed in the America East Conference Tournament, while the Retrievers fall to 2-2.

Ty paced all goal scorers with eight goals and his cousin counterpart’s, Lyle, seven assists came off the stick of Ty while recording four goals himself.

The first stanza saw UAlbany (10-3, 4-0 America East) rattle of four goals for an early 4-2 lead. John Maloney began the offensive charge with a goal three minutes into the contest. Fuller found a cutting Maloney to notch the first goal of the game and his first assist.

Following a UMBC (5-7, 2-2 America East) Phil Poe goal just 19 seconds later, the Great Danes went on a three-goal stretch to extend their lead to three, 4-1. Ty Thompson hit the top right corner of the net for his first goal of the game to begin the run, which was his first of just two unassisted goals he had. Then two and a half minutes later Lyle connected with Ty for the first of seven goals together. Maloney later notched his second goal of the game from Lyle at the 4:19 mark to cap the run.

The Retrievers held their ground, outscoring the Great Danes 5-4 in the second period to cut the deficit to one, 8-7. UMBC used a balanced attack with four different goal scorers to keep the contest in striking distance. Matt Gregoire began and ended the second stanza with a goal. Gregoire began the period with a goal three minutes in by dodging one UAlbany defender and striking a goal on the left part of the net. Gregoire then finished the half, scoring with one second remaining on a hustle-play ground ball pick up in front of the net and snapping one over the left shoulder of the goalie.

The second half became the Lyle-to-Ty Thompson highlight reel, as the two combined for eight goals and five assists.

Ty struck three consecutive goals in the third period, two were assisted by Lyle, to extend the Great Dane lead to four, 11-7. UAlbany goalie Blaze Riorden dug deep and allowed one goal on six shots in the 15-minute period to hold a three-goal advantage leading into the fourth and final period.

UMBC’s Gregoire did not go away, scoring his fourth goal of the contest with 10:48 left in the final period to cut the lead to two, 11-9.

However, Lyle connected with Ty for three goals and scored two by himself for the game’s final five of six goals to hold onto a 16-10 victory. Ty’s final goal of the contest was his 100th goal of his career to become the 12th Great Dane in program history to reach the 100-goal plateau.

Riorden racked up 13 saves on 23 chances to improve to 10-3 on the season. UMBC goalie Wes DiRito tallied nine saves on 25 chances to fall to 5-7 on the season.

UAlbany wraps up its final non-conference contest against crosstown rival Siena on Tuesday, April 23 at 4:30 p.m. The game will be televised on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
