Track And Field Sets For UTech And Upstate Classics

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany track and field program will divide its squads for competition this weekend between the UTech Classic in Kingston, Jamaica and the Upstate Track and Field Classic at RPI. Both meets will take place on Saturday.

ABOUT THE UTECH CLASSIC (Schedule)
The sixth running of the UTech Track and Field Classic will feature athletes from the Caribbean, North and South America, as well as Paralympic athletes from the Caribbean, Latin America, South America, and Asia. The meet begins Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at National Stadium.

ABOUT THE UPSTATE TRACK AND FIELD CLASSIC (Schedule)
The Upstate Track and Field Classic at RPI, a non-scoring meet, will feature athletes from UAlbany, Oneonta, Vassar, RPI, Plattsburgh, Union, and Hamilton. The meet begins at 1:00 p.m. at Harkness Field.

BOWEN EARNS AMERIC EAST WEEKLY HONORS (Release)
UAlbany men’s track and field sophomore Alexander Bowen has been named the America East Field Performer of the Week, announced by the conference office Tuesday. Bowen (Beacon, N.Y.) captured the high jump title at the UConn Dog Fight with a leap of 6′ 10.75″. With three meets in the books this spring, Bowen has placed first in every high jump competition, highlighted by his record breaking 7’3” mark at the 7th Annual Carolina Spring Break Classic in Puerto Rico (3/16). The feat ranks eighth in the nation.

REGIONAL RANKINGS
Already boasting some of the top marks in the nation, UAlbany’s men earned a No. 7 rank in the Week 1 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Northeast Region rankings, and a number 11 rank in Week 2. The women ranked sixth for both the first and second weeks.

GOING THE DISTANCE
Senior Ethan Clary won the steeplechase title for the second consecutive meet, running a time of 9:16.34 at the Dog Fight versus UConn. The meet prior, Clary earned America East Performer of the Week honors after pacing the field with a time of 9:13.67 at the UCF Invitational (3/23).

FANNING SHATTERS RECORD
With a time of 4:22.83, junior Kathryn Fanning shattered the program’s 1500m record at the UConn Invite Saturday, leading the University at Albany women’s track and field team. While breaking a record that stood since 2006 (Jenna Ortman: 4:28.12), Fanning’s outstanding mark ranks15th in the NCAA East Region and should qualify her for the NCAA Regionals in May.
