Three Outdoor Track Athletes Named All-Academic

America East Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University at Albany outdoor track & field program had three athletes named to the America East 2014 All-Academic squad, the conference offices announced Tuesday.  John DeLallo was named on the men’s side, while Kathryn Fanning and Silvia Del Fava were named to the women’s squad.  All three athletes were also named to the most recent All-Academic team for indoor track.

DeLallo, a junior from Marietta, New York, earned his second consecutive Outdoor All-Academic honor.  He has accumulated a 3.80 GPA while majoring in Physics.  He has also been named to the All-Academic squad for indoor track in 2013.  Additionally, DeLallo has been named America East Scholar-Athlete for Spring 2013 and Winter 2014. On the track, DeLallo led UAlbany athletes in the 800 (1:50.37) and the 1,500 (3:54.58).  He finished third at the America East Outdoor Championships in the 800.  He is sixth all-time in UAlbany history in the 1,500, and seventh all-time in the 800.

Fanning, a senior from Manlius, New York, pulled a 3.98 GPA as a Biology major.  She is a published author in the Journal of Neuroscience and a researcher at the RNA Institute.  With the award for the outdoor season, Fanning has been named to the All-Academic squads for all three seasons during her senior year, having already been named to the cross country and indoor squads.  Additonally, she has earned All-Academic honors for outdoor track in 2013, indoor track in 2013 and 2012, and cross country in 2012 and 2011, accumulating a total of eight such awards.  This year, she was granted the SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award, as well as the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.  Fanning was also nominated to the pool for America East Woman of the Year.  Athletically, Fanning broke her own school record in the 1,500 at America East Outdoor Championships, finishing second overall in 4:22.81.  She earned a conference title as a member of UAlbany’s victorious 4×800 relay.  In addition to her school record in the 1,500, Fanning ranks fourth all-time in the 800 at 2:10.55.

Del Fava, a senior from Lucca, Italy, previously earned All-Academic honors for 2014’s indoor season, the first season she was eligible for the award.  She has accumulated a 3.98 GPA studying Urban Studies & Planning and Geography, and was also a USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Academic selection for the 2013 season.  She set a new school record in the 10,000 in the championship section at the Penn Relays, finishing fourth with a time of 34:13.82.  A week later, she won the 5,000 at the America East Outdoor Championships in 16:48.18.

The 2014 America East Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic Team was made up of student-athletes from eight of the nine America East member institutions. The All-Academic teams have ten members for each gender, except in the event of a tie, and is voted on by a committee of Sports Information Directors, Academic Advisors and FARs. Each nominee must meet the set standards of a cumulative 3.30 or better GPA, have been a starter or significant reserve this past year and participated in at least 50 percent of the teams meets in 2014.

Fanning and Del Fava will join a handful of their teammates at the NCAA East Regional Championships later this week in Jacksonville, Florida, for a chance to qualify for NCAA Division I Nationals.
