The “Legends” have arrived
By Lee McPeters
Time travel. Heroes. Action.
The new DC Comics show “Legends of Tomorrow,” which airs at 8 p.m. Thursdays on the CW Network, has all of these and more. It’s safe to say that it’s another hit in the genre.
“Legends of Tomorrow” keeps viewers on the edges of their seats with action that never stops and plot twists that keep our excitement and attention. Although corny at times, it is a show based on comic books, so the corny aspect aids the authenticity.
The main characters are a team of nine heroes on a quest to save the world. If viewers have seen either of DC’s other television shows – “Arrow” or “The Flash,” both of which also air on the CW – they will recognize some of the characters. Atom and White Canary were first seen on “Arrow,” and Firestorm, Hawkgirl, Hawkman, Heat Wave and Captain Cold appeared on “The Flash.” Rip Hunter joins the group as the team’s leader. He is a time traveler who has rebelled against the Time Masters organization and has gone rogue, stealing his ship called Waverider.
Their goal is to find and stop Vandal Savage, a time traveling supervillain, whose sole intent is to wreak havoc and start a war to dominate and destroy the world. He is a 4,000-year-old immortal who has manipulated different leaders throughout the timeline to create war and disruption, which aids his plan for world domination. Savage, however, has met his match in our nine heroes who travel to different eras trying to stop him from carrying out his evil plan.
Savage isn’t their only enemy though. Also pursuing them is Chronos, a time-traveling bounty hunter hired by the Time Masters in order to stop Rip Hunter and bring him back into the custody of the Time Masters. The team also encounters other adversaries such as time pirates.
The time travel aspect is fun to watch and the different time periods our characters visit are well done and interesting. The audience cheers as the team fights Savage, yet he always seems to escape their grasp. There are internal issues and fights as well,- at some points so deep we wonder if the team will stay intact.
Hard choices have to be made, and viewers’ emotions are on edge as they watch their favorite characters go through different challenges. They never give up, though, instead pressing on, continuing the fight and keeping their eye on their shared goal to end Savage and save the world.
Viewers would agree with Rip Hunter as he tells our heroes, “I know it’s difficult for you to fathom, but where—when I’m from, the year 2166—you and everyone on this roof aren’t just considered heroes… you’re legends.”
