Sommer Garners USA Track and Field Junior All-America Honors

DES MOINES – Competing alongside the nation’s most elite 16-19 year olds, University at Albany freshman James Sommer placed seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:44.77 Thursday afternoon at the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships held at Drake Stadium.

With the top eight finishers in each event earning All-America honors, Sommer became UAlbany’s 11th Junior All-American since 2004, joining Alexander Bowen, Matthew Catera, Sean Halpin, Tyler Fogarty, John Moore, Joe Greene, Alyssa Lotmore, Ryan Gaedje, Jessica Ortman, and Jenna Ortman in the Great Dane archives.

“This was James’ first competition since the America East Championships in May,” said Roberto Vives, UAlbany’s Director of Track and Field/Cross Country. “Finishing seventh in the nation and earning Junior All-America honors is something to be really proud of.”

The Massapequa, N.Y. native ran the fastest time of his rookie season at the America East Championships with a mark of 9:22.52.

Still to race, Sommer’s teammates Taariq Jones (400m), Jeremiah Obeng-Agyapong (400m H), and Aderinsola Ajala (400m H) compete Friday afternoon.

The USA Junior Championships feature athletes between 16 and 19 years of age and serve as the selection for the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia in August. The top two finishers with a world standard in each event are invited to compete as members of Team USA.
