STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Facing elimination in the championship round of the America East Tournament, the University at Albany softball team gutted out a 10-inning, 3-2 victory over top seed and host Stony Brook, forcing a deciding game this afternoon for the championship.  UAlbany (32-11) will play Stony Brook (34-17) for the sixth time this season, holding a record of 2-3 against the Seawolves so far.  All games between the two teams have been played at Stony Brook’s home field.

Brittany MacFawn (18-6) started the game on the mound for UAlbany, her third start of the tournament.  She pitched a complete game (10.0 innings), allowing two runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

The game remained entirely scoreless through nine full innings.  UAlbany had a chance to score early when Vicky McFarland opened the bottom of the first inning with a walk, and then a stolen base.  She advanced to third when Kelly Costello grounded out to the pitcher, but was ultimately stranded at third.

UAlbany didn’t record their first hit until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Alexa Toole hit a single through the right side with one out.  McFarland then hit a single of her own, advancing Toole to second.  But, again, the runners were stranded when Costello lined out to left and Maggie Cocks lined out to right to end the inning.

In the seventh inning, McFarland hit a two-out single to shortstop.  She was caught stealing second during Costello’s at-bat, ending the inning.

Finally, Stony Brook broke onto the scoreboard with a leadoff home run in the top of the 10th.  The Seawolves added a second run in the inning, to take a 2-0 lead.  McFarland, leading off once again when the Danes came up to bat, hit a single through the right side.  Costello then flied out to left, and Cock flied out to right.  Charlise Castro worked a two-out walk, which pushed McFarland to second.  Elizabeth Snow ended the game with a walk off, three-run home run to left, winning the game for UAlbany 3-2.  McFarland hit 3-4 with a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base.  Snow hit 1-5 with a home run and three RBIs.

With one loss apiece in the double-elimination tournament, UAlbany and Stony Brook will play one more time to determine the 2014 America East Tournament champion.  The game is scheduled to begin this afternoon, shortly after the conclusion of the previous game.
