Softball Takes Opening Game Against Maine

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. – Inclement weather struck again today as the University at Albany softball team’s doubleheader against Maine was pushed to tomorrow, with the teams agreeing to play only the first game of the three-game set today.  The Danes (12-7, 2-2) defeated the Black Bears (12-10, 4-2) 4-0, earning their third consecutive victory.

Brittany MacFawn (6-4) started the game on the mount for UAlbany, pitching a complete game shutout, giving up two hits, striking out 10, and walking one.  The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning.  Elizabeth Snow led off the inning with a single to left field.  Emily Ostrom came in to pinch run for Snow, but was not needed because Charlise Castro hit a home run to left field in the very next at bat.

UAlbany added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Vicky McFarland led off the inning with a home run to left field, her second in three games.  Kelly Costello then doubled to left, and advanced to third on a ground out by Maggie Cocks.  Snow reached first base on a catching error by the second baseman covering first, and advanced to second as Costello scored UAlbany’s fourth and final run of the day.

Maine’s best scoring chance came in the top of the third with no outs, when they had a runner advance to third on a wild pitch, after having reached first safely on an error by Kate Biasi, and subsequently advancing to second.  A sacrifice bunt pushed the runner on first to second, but couldn’t drive in the runner on third.  The next two batters lined out to second and grounded out to third respectively, stranding runners on second and third, and ending the scoring opportunity.

Despite the schedule shift, UAlbany is expected to play the full series against Maine this weekend.  Two games will be played tomorrow, April 6, starting at 11:00 a.m.
