Softball Returns To Florida For Rebel Spring Games

Tournament Central

ALBANY, N.Y. – Following a longer-than-expected break in live competition, the University at Albany softball team will compete for the next six days in Winter Haven, Florida at the Rebel Spring Games preseason tournament.  The Danes, (2-2), have already played in the Citrus Classic in February, but their trip to last week’s Towson Classic was cancelled due to inclement weather rendering the playing field unusable.  Similarly, UAlbany’s fifth game of the Citrus Classic was cancelled due to rain, meaning the team has played only four of their first 10 scheduled games of the 2014 season.

The team will play 10 games over six days starting Thursday, March 13, with a rest day on Sunday, March 16.  The Danes are slated to play against Utah Valley (5-14), two games against Saint Peter’s (2-8), South Dakota (11-8), Creighton (9-10), Howard (1-7), two games against Army (5-8), UW-Green Bay (8-2), and Buffalo (9-7).

UAlbany’s first game of the season lasted 10 innings, where the Danes came back from run deficits four times to defeat Marshall 12-11.  Brittany MacFawn (2-0) pitched all 10 innings in that game, recording 13 strikeouts.  Her second game, against Northern Illinois featured a rain delay that pushed the conclusion of the game to the following day.  MacFawn returned to the mound to conclude the game she started, earning her second victory of the season 3-1.

Maggie Cocks is leading the Danes offensively, batting .462 with one home run and five RBIs through four games.  Elizabeth Snow was named America East Rookie of the Week following her performance at the Citrus Classic.  Snow is batting .286 with one home run and three RBIs.

Following the final game at Rebel on March 18, the Danes have a relatively quick turnaround before regular season play commences at Stony Brook on Saturday, March 22.  The following Saturday, March 29, the Danes host their first home series, in a three-game set against Binghamton.
