Softball Hosts UMass-Lowell In Final Regular Season Homestand

ALBANY, N.Y. – An unconventionally scattered regular season is finally winding to a close, and the University at Albany softball program will host its final regular season home games this weekend in a three-game set against conference newcomer UMass-Lowell.

Additionally, the four seniors on the roster, Emily Ostrom, Lauren Alcorn, Charlise Castro, and Brittany MacFawn, will be honored in a small ceremony before the first game on Saturday for senior day.

The Danes have compiled an overall record of 22-10 and have won 10 of their last 12 games.  Additionally, the team is second in the America East with a conference record of 8-3.  The Danes have won their last five games in-conference, after taking one of three from Stony Brook and two of three from Maine to begin the season.  After the series against UMass-Lowell (9-31, 1-10), UAlbany will have one final conference series, on the road against UMBC to close the regular season.

It’s difficult to discern what to expect against a new conference team like UMass-Lowell, as there is no competitive history with the school.  Among the common opponents between the two teams, UMass-Lowell lost single games to Siena and Creighton, lost two against Maine and Bryant, lost two of three against Binghamton, and was swept by Stony Brook.  UAlbany swept a doubleheader against Siena, lost one to Creighton, won two of three against Maine, split with Bryant, took one of three from Stony Brook, and swept a doubleheader against Binghamton.

Even so, the Danes cannot rely on those results to determine how the games will unfold this weekend, and they will need to take each game and each inning for what it offers.

After the series this weekend, the Danes will close out the regular season with seven consecutive road games.  The team will play consecutive road doubleheader rematches against Siena and Army, before closing out with three against UMBC.  The America East tournament begins on Thursday, May 8.  Tomorrow, the first game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., and the second game will follow at 3:00 p.m.  Sunday’s game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
