VESTAL, N.Y. – The No. 1 seeded University at Albany softball team took care of business in the opening round of the 2013 America East Tournament. UAlbany defeated the No. 4 seed, Stony Brook, 4-0, on Thursday, May 9 at the BU Sports Complex. Junior Brittany MacFawn recorded her 27th win of the season, tying a program and America East single-season record. Junior Charlise Castro added a run and RBI, going 2-for-2 at the plate.

The Great Danes struck first with three runs in the third. Senior Lindsey Stout highlighted the inning with a two-run RBI single to right field. Castro opened up the frame with a leadoff walk and was advanced to third off a sac-bunt by junior Lauren Alcorn. She was driven home on a fielding error to score the game’s first run.

Castro, who was named to the all-conference second team, again found herself involved in a scoring play two frames later – this time driving in a run. The first basemen ripped a two-out RBI single to extend the UAlbany (36-13, 15-2 AE) lead to 4-0 through five innings. MacFawn escaped trouble in both the fifth and sixth inning, leaving two Seawolves’ runners on-base in each frame.

“We came up with some timely hits in clutch situations,” said head coach Chris Cannata. “It’s important to put together hits when we have the opportunity to score, especially in a nerve-racking, close game, like this one.”

MacFawn (27-7), the America East Pitcher of the Year, threw her 12th complete game shutout of the season. She came into today’s contest ranked fourth nationally in shutouts. The right-handed hurler allowed four hits, striking out six and walking zero. Stony Brook (31-23, 10-8 AE) sophomore Allison Cukrov took the loss. She dropped to 12-14 on the season, pitching 5.1 innings and six hits, three earned runs, two walks and striking out three.

UAlbany will battle No. 2 seeded Binghamton (29-15, 14-4 AE) in round two action tomorrow. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. A second win clinches a berth into the America East Championship game.
