Softball Defeats Siena For Third Time This Season

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The University at Albany softball team headed across town for one final game against local rival Siena on Tuesday.  The Danes (26-10, 11-3) defeated the Saints (25-21) 4-0, sweeping the three games against Siena this season.

Mackenzie Thompson (8-2) started the game on the mound for UAlbany, pitching a complete game shutout, surrendering five hits, striking out three, and walking zero.  UAlbany continued its trend of scoring early, putting up one run on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning.  Vicky McFarland led off the game grounding out to Siena’s pitcher.  The next batter, Kelly Costello, was hit by a pitch.  Maggie Cocks then hit a double that scored Costello from first.

UAlbany scored another run in the top of the third inning.  McFarland once again led off the inning, this time lining out to third.  Costello hit a single to left and proceeded to successfully steal second, and advanced to third on an error by Siena’s second baseman.  Cocks then singled to left, driving Costello in for the second time of the game.

The game remained scoreless until UAlbany added its final two runs of the game in the top of the sixth.  Elizabeth Snow led off the inning with a single to center.  Kate Biasi substituted for Snow as a pinch runner, and advanced to second when Charlise Castro reached safely on an error by Siena’s third baseman.  Marlin Solano then hit a single, and advanced to second while Castro made it to third on the throw to the plate that caught Biasi trying to score.  Ostrom substituted for Solano at second as a pinch runner before Lauren Alcorn flied out to first for the second out of the inning.  Caitlin Cooper then hit a single, which drove in both Castro and Ostrom.

Costello hit 1-3 with two runs scored on the game.  Cocks hit 2-3 with two RBIs.  Snow batted 2-2 with a walk.  Cooper hit 2-3 with two RBIs.  Pitcher Brittany MacFawn made an appearance at the plate in the top of the seventh inning as a pinch hitter for Jess Tate.

The Danes have five games remaining on their schedule before the America East Tournament begins.  The team will head south to West Point tomorrow for a rematch doubleheader against Army, before flying to Baltimore on Thursday to take on UMBC in a three-game set Friday and Saturday.
