Reviewing the ketogenic diet

People are always looking for the newest way to lose weight. One new fad is the Ketogenic diet ― shortened to “keto” or the diet that is very low in carbs, moderate in protein, and high in fat. This diet that takes a “more fat to lose fat” mentality. Someone on the keto diet may find themselves eating things like bacon and butter.

 

The whole science behind the diet is to get your body into a state of ketosis. This is a metabolic state in which the body does not have enough carbs to use as energy, so it turns to burn fat as a fuel source instead. When your body reaches this ketosis state, it will burn fat and shed pounds. Some people who have tried the diet have also reported feeling a mental clarity because their mind is not running on sugar power, but rather on fat power. People have also reported feeling more energized.

 

For many the keto diet has given them fast results, with some studies reporting up to fifteen pounds lost within the first month. However, this is not actually fat loss, but water loss. Water molecules have a strong bond to carbohydrates, and when you get rid of the carbohydrates from your body, you flush out water that shows up on the scale.

 

The keto diet is not sustainable because of the sheer amount of fat you are consuming. Many nutritionists worry that eating such an amount of fat will lead to health issues over time such as heart disease and high cholesterol. Another issue that concerns people about the keto diet is that it is simply not realistic. A diet that has almost no carbohydrate intake in its plan is hard to stick to because so many foods contain carbs. It is easy to gain the weight back as soon as you have a cheat day. Is the keto diet too extreme and difficult to stick to?

 

I decided to give the keto a try to see if the pros outweigh the cons. I was only able to sustain the diet for a week. It left me groggy and exhausted. It was difficult to find enough healthy food that was high in fat but low in carbs.

 

At the end of the day with any diet, it’s all about finding what works for you and your body. It’s all about trial and error, so don’t be afraid to try new things. But at the same time, it’s important to remember to listen to your body.

    Oh God! What bad journalism. Please research further than just a quick Google search to see “what people claim on the diet” and you need more than a week on any diet to even know how it’s going to make you feel. This is garbage journalism and should never have been published

    For some people, a ketogenic diet is not a good option. It typically takes at least a week or more to get into ketosis. Those first few days can be rough! However, we have been following a ketogenic diet for nearly two years and have no health issues at all. All blood levels of micronutrients are excellent. Lipid levels are excellent. We don’t live on bacon and butter.
    There are plenty of foods that are nutrient dense and low in carbohydrates.
    I am a nutrition professional and highly recommend that if you are going to try a ketogenic diet that you work with a nutritionist/dietitian who understands, from a scientific basis, the proper protocols to follow. I have a thriving nutrition practice and my clients have been very successful. Yes, it’s a way to lose weight. However, it is also possible to reverse chronic diseases, get off medications, and be truly healthy. That, in my opinion, far outweighs the “pain” of giving up fast foods and soda.
