Patrick Hairston Speaks At NASSM Conference

ALBANY, N.Y. — Patrick O. Hairston, University at Albany Executive Associate Athletics Director, was a guest presenter at the 2014 North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) conference held in Pittsburgh May 27-31.

NASSM is an organization that supports and assists professionals working in the fields of sport, leisure and recreation. The purpose of the NASSM is to promote, stimulate, and encourage study, research, scholarly writing, and professional development in the area of sport management – both theoretical and applied aspects. Topics of interest to NASSM members include sport marketing, future directions in management, employment perspectives, management competencies, leadership, sport and the law, personnel management, facility management, organizational structures, fundraising, and conflict resolution.

Hairston’s topic was based on his dissertation research entitled, “Career Trajectory of Ethnic Minority Males to the Division I Director of Athletics Position.” A total of 487 abstracts were submitted for consideration for a demonstration, and only 302 were accepted for an oral presentation at the conference.

In addition, Hairston will participate in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Senior Administrators Mentoring Institute June 11-12 in Orlando, Fla. The focus of the NACDA Mentoring Institute is to assist and prepare those individuals that are Senior Level Administrators in athletics administration who are one step away from becoming an athletics director. Participants will learn the essentials of what it takes to position oneself for the AD role along with how to manage a department after being selected.
