No. 20/20 Women’s Lacrosse Earns Share of America East Regular Season Title, Two Seed in League Championship

DURHAM, N.H.-  No. 20/20 University at Albany women’s lacrosse (13-2, 4-1 AE) downed New Hampshire (7-9, 2-3 AE) 19-5 to take a share of the America East regular season championship on Saturday afternoon. The Purple & Gold captured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming league championship at Stony Brook, and will face No. 3 seed Vermont on Friday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m.

“We adapted to some challenging conditions and an unfamiliar surface very well today,” said head coach John Battaglino. “I was pleased with our effort and we’re looking forward to the league tournament next weekend.”

The Great Danes won the first five draw controls, including two draw wins from Nichole Eamer to open the game. Katherine Sweeney opened scoring on a free position shot to make the score 1-0.

Sarah Martin made it 2-0 UAlbany on a scramble in front of the UNH goal moments later. The Great Danes started the game with five straight draw control wins and a 2-for-2 conversion on free position shots.

Battaglino’s squad began having its way down the middle, as Phelan found Sweeney for her second goal of the game to make the score 4-2. Martin hit the post twice on a similar play on the next two possessions.

Turnovers continued to hurt the Wildcats as the game went on. Meghan Haney intercepted a UNH pass to find Maureen Keggins streaking down the field. Keggins made the score 7-2 shortly thereafter on her second straight goal, leading to a UNH timeout.

Sweeney matched her single-game career high with three goals on another free position shot with six minutes left in the half. The sophomore made the score 8-3.

Parker found her way through traffic on the ensuing draw to score. Phelan found the back of the cage from fellow senior Parker for a man-up goal with nine second left in the half to conclude scoring. The Great Danes held a 10-4 lead at the break and a 21-10 advantage in shots. The Wildcats had 10 turnovers after the first 30 minutes of play.

Sweeney opened the second half with a new single-game career high in goals, notching her fourth of the game from Parker less than one minute in.

Rachel Bowles got in on the scoring in the second half, tallying two straight goals to make the score 13-4. The sophomore scored three goals in the second 30 minutes of play.

UAlbany concluded the game on an unanswered six-goal run to win 19-5.

Keggins and Sweeney both set new single-game career highs in goals with four and five, respectively. Parker matched a career high with seven points on three goals and four assists. Junior defender Erin Monna recorded a single-game career high three caused turnovers.

The Great Danes outshot the Wildcats 40-14 and committed just five turnovers to UNH’s 14.
