UAlbany leads the series 13-1 |

ALBANY, N.Y. – The No. 18/17 University at Albany women’s lacrosse team (9-1, 1-0 AE) meets Vermont (10-2, 1-0 AE) in Burlington for the squad’s first league road game of the season on Saturday. Opening draw is slated for 2:00 p.m.

The Great Danes are coming off a close game in the Carrier Dome on Tuesday, a 13-11 loss to No. 3/3 Syracuse. Senior midfielder Allie Phelan had five goals in that game, becoming the only player to score five goals on the Orange this season. Anna Berman had 11 saves in the cage, matching a career high for the senior against the fifth-ranked offense in the nation.

UAlbany took a decisive 22-2 win against Binghamton in its first America East Conference game last Saturday. Phelan also had five goals in that game, as well as freshman attack Dakotah Savitcheff.

SPREAD THE LOVE

John Battaglino’s squad has relied on a balanced goal-scoring core this season. Sophomore attack Rachel Bowles scored three or more goals in the first six games of the season. She leads the team with 50 points (30g, 20a). Ariana Parker has recorded a point in every game this season, and has tallied three or more points in five of her last six contests. Phelan has scored 10 goals in the last two games, marking a new single-game career high for the senior.

Sarah Martin and Dakotah Savitcheff have also become scoring threats in their freshmen campaign. Savitcheff ranks second on the team with 26 goals, while Martin has scored two goals or more in her last three games.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

A win would…

  • Put UAlbany at 10 wins for the fifth-straight season
  • Send the Great Danes to 2-0 in conference play, making them one of two possible undefeated teams in league play
  • Extend UAlbany’s streak to 7-0 against the Catamounts and 14-1 overall

A loss would…

  • Put the Great Danes behind Vermont and potentially Stony Brook in the league standings
  • Be Vermont’s first win in the series since 2008
  • Extend Vermont’s already record-setting season in wins to 11
  • Hand UAlbany consecutive losses for the first time since 2012

SCOUTING VERMONT

The Catamounts already have 10 wins to their credit this season, and are on a three game winning streak under head coach Jen Johnson. Vermont has experienced a notable turnaround in 2014 after going 7-11 last season.

Vermont has only played one other nationally ranked team, falling 16-6 to then-No. 6 UMass. Four of Vermont’s 10 wins have come at the expense of teams with an RPI of 75 or lower, out of 100 Division I women’s lacrosse teams. Johnson’s squad beat UNH 15-12 for its first America East win.

Senior Sydney Mas leads the Catamounts on offense, ranking second in the nation with 47 goals. She has 238 career points to her credit and needs just three more to become the program’s leader in the category. Mas is the first Catamount all-time to score 200 goals or more in her career.
