Syracuse leads the series 6-0 | GAME NOTES

ALBANY, N.Y. – The No. 18/17 University at Albany women’s lacrosse team (9-0, 1-0 AE) faces its toughest nonconference challenge of the season on Tuesday at the Carrier Dome against No. 3/3 Syracuse (10-1, 3-1 ACC). The game will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel, with the opening draw at 6:07 p.m.

UAlbany is out to a 9-0, including 1-0 in the America East after downing Binghamton 22-2 on Saturday. Senior midfielder Allie Phelan and freshman attack Dakotah Savitcheff scored five goals apiece to lead the Great Danes. Savitcheff was named the league’s Rookie of the Week on Monday after scoring eight goals and shooting 88.9% last week.

THE OLD STOMPING GROUNDS

All three coaches on the UAlbany staff have connections to the Orange. Battaglino was an assistant at Syracuse under Gary Gait until 2009. Assistant coach Jess Davos (DeRosa) was a four-year member of the lacrosse team at Syracuse and Tee Ladouceur played three years under Gait.

Current Syracuse assistant Katie Rowan also spent time with the Great Danes as an assistant in 2011 and 2012.

The teams are meeting for the first time since 2008, when Rowan and Ladouceur competed on opposite sides before Ladouceur transferred to Syracuse. In that game, Rowan tallied four goals and four assists while Ladouceur scored three goals and tallied one assist in the game her freshman year. Syracuse took a 21-11 victory almost six years to the day of Tuesday’s game.

HOME SWEET HOME

The Great Danes are currently riding a 12-game home winning streak, following a 22-2 rout of Binghamton on Saturday. UAlbany has not lost at John Fallon Field since April of 2012.

RANKED AND ROLLING

The Purple & Gold entered the Brine and IWLCA Polls last week, at No. 18 and No. 20, respectively. The Great Danes have since moved up to be ranked No. 17 in the Brine Poll and No. 18 in the IWLCA Poll. The highest all-time ranking for UAlbany was No. 8, achieved in 2011 after going 15-0 in the regular season. The Great Danes are out to their best start since going undefeated through the America East Tournament and the first round of NCAA’s in 2011.

PARKER-BOWLES ROYALS

Sophomore attack Rachel Bowles and senior midfielder Ariana Parker have combined to lead UAlbany in three categories this season, including points, assists and shots. The duo make up more than one-third of the team’s points and goals so far this season. One of the two has recorded at least one point in their last 16 games, dating back to a loss at Stony Brook last year in the regular season.

THAT 9-5 GRIND

In addition to their national rankings in each category, the Great Danes have topped several categories for UAlbany dating back five seasons through the first nine games. This year’s Danes have won more draw controls (120) and recorded more points per game (22.44) through the first nine games than any UAlbany squad in the last five seasons.
