No. 16 Field Hockey Meets Maine in America East Semifinals on Thursday


ALBANY, N.Y.- For the second consecutive year, University at Albany field hockey (15-4, 4-1 AE) will face Maine in the America East semifinals on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Great Danes downed Maine 2-1 in Orono earlier this season. Fiori Van Rijswijk opened scoring in that contest in the 13th minute unassisted. Six-time America East Rookie of the Week Paula Heuser scored to give the Great Danes a 2-0 lead, and the eventual game-winner.

Phil Sykes & co. is coming off a 5-1 win at UMass Lowell on Saturday. UAlbany posted a program-best 15 wins in the regular season, and ranks among the nation’s and league’s leaders in multiple categories. The Purple & Gold is ranked second nationally in scoring average (4.32), and third in points per game (11.95), goals per game (4.32), scoring margin (3.16) and assists per game (3.32).

The Great Danes top 12 statistical categories in the America East, including scoring margin, scoring average, shutouts (7), goals against average (1.16), shots and shots per game (408/21.47), goals scored and goals scored per game (83/4.32), goals allowed and goals allowed per game (22/1.16); as well as assists and assists per game (63/3.32).

The freshman-senior tandem of Daphne Voormolen and Paula Heuser rank among the league’s leaders in several offensive categories. Heuser is first in points (42), tied for first in goals (16) and assists (10). Voormolen ranks second in points with 39 and tied for third in goals (15). Sophomore midfielders Laura Page and Fiori Van Rijswijk are tied for third in the league in assists with nine apiece.

The Black Bears and Great Danes meet in the America East semifinals for the second-consecutive time and the third time in eight years. Last year UAlbany downed Maine 4-1 en route to its second America East title in three years. In that game also played in Durham, senior co-captain Daphne Voormolen scored three goals.


With the 2-1 win earlier this season, the Great Danes took a 9-8 advantage in the all-time series. UAlbany has won the last three meetings.

Since falling to the Great Danes in Orono in their second league game, the Black Bears lost 3-2 in overtime at New Hampshire. Maine also needed overtime to down Bryant, a team UAlbany beat 8-0 to open the season. Maine most recently beat Vermont 9-1.

Annebelle Hamilton and Holly Stewart lead the Black Bears with 13 and 12 goals, respectively.

No. 2 UAlbany vs. No. 3 Maine, 5 p.m.
