STONY BROOK, N.Y. – A masterful offensive 14-point performance by junior attackman Miles Thompson upended Stony Brook, 21-12, on Saturday, April 27 at LaValle Stadium. Miles’ 14 points shatters his brother Lyle’s 11-point game previously set against UMBC earlier this season and ties for the third highest point total in NCAA history (Air Force’s Bill Woolford – 16, John DiMento – 15).

Along with Miles’ career day, Lyle Thompson, with four assists, broke the America East Conference single assists in season record with 55, which was previously held by Delaware’s John Grant of 54 in 1999.

Following a three-game absence, Miles picked up where he left off scoring the first two goals of the game in the first two minutes to give UAlbany (11-4, 5-0 America East) an early 2-0 lead. Tim Cox added two more and Dwayne Stewart tallied one to extend the lead to four, 5-1, to end the first stanza.

Stony Brook’s (7-8, 2-3 America East) Jeff Tundo began the second quarter with a goal to cut the deficit to three, 5-2, with 12 minutes remaining.

The Great Danes struck back with three straight goals to expand their lead to six, 8-2. Matthew Bertrams tallied his first goal of the season to begin the run and Miles topped it off with game’s first hat trick. Then with two more goals from the stick of Miles, UAlbany led 11-4 at the end of the half.

Both teams traded goals to begin the third quarter until the Great Danes ran off four more goals to extend their lead to 10, 16-6, with 6:31 left in the quarter. Ty Thompson scored his team-leading 43rd and 44th goals of the season to spark the run. After Derrick Eccles found the back of the net, Kevin Glueckert won the next face-off and took it the length of the field 14 seconds later for his first of the season.

The Seawolves responded with three goals to end the quarter to bring them within seven, 16-9. Brody Eastwood, Challen Rogers and Mike Rooney all joined into the scoring run to keep Stony Brook in the contest.

UAlbany rattled off five of the next six goals for the game’s largest lead, 21-9, with 9:07 left. Ryan Feuerstein and Lyle Thompson each chipped in with two goals to grab the largest lead of the game.

The Great Dane defense held the Seawolves to two goals in the final nine minutes to finish the season undefeated in conference play for the second time in program history.

UAlbany goalie Blaze Riorden tallied 14 saves on 26 chances to improve to 11-4 on the season. Stony Brook goalie Dan Shaughnessy recorded 10 saves on 31 chances to fall to 7-9.

The Great Danes will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and face No. 4 seed Stony Brook on Thursday, May 2 at LaValle Stadium. The game is slated for 7 p.m. on AmericaEast.com
