ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany men’s basketball (12-12, 6-5 AE) hits the road for a mid-week match-up at UMBC (8-16, 4-7 AE) at 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

UAlbany gave up 12 threes to Hartford last Saturday night en route to a 67-54 loss in West Hartford. In their previous meeting, the Great Danes got the best of the Hawks from the three-point line, making a program-best 16 to take an 81-56 win at home. The Purple & Gold failed to score a field goal for the final 5:47 of the game on Feb. 8.

In another flip-flopped storyline, the Great Danes tallied a season-high 18 assists in their 81-56 win at home, but only managed five in the loss on the road. The five assists matched a season-low for Will Brown’s squad.

Sam Rowley tallied his fifth double-double of the season and ninth of his career against the Hawks with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Rowley was also perfect from the free throw line when attempting five or more for the second time this season, going 6-for-6.

UMBC and UAlbany had a thrilling double-overtime finish on Jan. 8 at SEFCU Arena, with the Great Danes emerging victorious, 73-72. Senior center John Puk hit one of two free throws with 0.4 seconds left in the second overtime to secure the win. Sophomore guard Peter Hooley scored a career-high 27 points, going 8-for-14 from the field, 5-for-10 from three and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. In addition, Sam Rowley recorded his third double-double of the year with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Rowley also went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe and had five steals.

UAlbany leads the all-time series against UMBC 17-6, and has won the last nine meetings, dating back to the 2010-11 season. The Retrievers are one of three league teams the Great Danes have beaten the week of Valentine’s Day in the last five seasons. UAlbany downed UMBC 75-62 on Feb. 13, 2010.

• Since meeting in each team’s second America East game of the season, UMBC has gone 4-5 in the league with wins against Maine (79-76) Hartford (60-58) and New Hampshire (68-57) at home. The Retrievers also beat Binghamton on the road on Jan. 29, 73-61. The win against the Bearcats is UMBC’s only road victory, with an overall record of 1-12 away from home.

• Freshman point guard Rodney Elliott ranks second in the league in conference-only scoring with 15.7 points per game. He has been named the America East Rookie of the Week five times this season, including this past week. He is three rebounds away from becoming UMBC’s first freshman to total at least 300 points and 100 rebounds in his rookie season.

• In the team’s most recent game against UMass Lowell, the River Hawks’ Akeem Williams scored a season-high 30 points to take a 71-61 victory over the Retrievers. Elliott scored 26 points to lead UMBC.
