MacFawn, Cocks, Earn Weekly Honors

America East Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the final iteration of the 2014 America East weekly softball awards, the University at Albany was represented in two of four spots across three categories.  Brittany MacFawn was named Co-Pitcher of the Week for the second week in a row, sharing the award with Allison Curkov of Stony Brook, who also won a week ago.  MacFawn joins teammate Elizabeth Snow as the only three-time award winners on the roster.  Snow has been named Rookie of the Week three times this year.  Maggie Cocks was named Player of the Week for the first time this season.  The UAlbany duo was named alongside Binghamton outfielder Gabbi Bracci, who was awarded Rookie of the Week this week.

As she did a week ago, MacFawn threw her second no-hitter of the season to anchor her case for her weekly award.  The effort came in the first game against UMBC on Friday, where she pitched five innings, striking out six and walking two.  The game was called after the fifth inning, with UAlbany leading 8-0.  For the week, MacFawn went 2-0 with a save and an ERA of 0.55 in 12.2 innings of work.  She allowed five hits, with 17 strikeouts and three walks.

Cocks batted third and started all four games UAlbany played this week at shortstop.  She hit .692 with a slugging percentage of 1.231.  Four of her nine hits on the week were doubles, and one was a home run.  She scored three runs of her own and drove in six.  Cocks led the America East during the regular season in batting average, hitting .415.

UAlbany will now gear up for the America East tournament, which begins Thursday, May 8 at one-seed Stony Brook.  Two-seed UAlbany will play three-seed Binghamton Thursday at 3:30 p.m.  UAlbany defeated Binghamton in both games the teams played earlier this season.
