Great Danes Named Honorable Mention Team Of The Week By College Baseball Insider

RICHMOND, Va. – After sweeping Stony Brook — the reigning America East Conference champions, Coral Gables Regional Champions, Baton Rouge Super Regional Champions, and 2012 College World Series participants – the University at Albany baseball team has been recognized as an honorable mention CollegeBaseballInsider.com Louisville Slugger Team of the Week.

Over the weekend, UAlbany captured all three victories in an important America East Conference series against Stony Brook. In game one, the Great Danes triumphed, 5-4, in walk-off style in the bottom of the seventh. Despite trailing 4-0, UAlbany tied the ballgame with a four-run sixth inning. In the seventh, senior Greg Muller led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and pinch runner Adam Mund scored on freshman Evan Harasta’s game-ending single down the left field line. Reliever Austin Chase (2-3) came out of the pen to toss the final four frames and earned the victory. Holding Stony Brook without a hit until the sixth, Chase limited the Seawolves to just one run and two hits, while striking out two in his outing.

In the doubleheader’s nightcap, UAlbany jumped out to a 6-0 head start and held on to win 9-6. On the mound for UAlbany, Kasceim Graham (4-3) earned the win, tossing six and a third innings, holding SBU to two runs and five hits, while striking out six. With the tying run at the plate, closer Derek Zielinski earned the save after striking out the final two batters of the victory.

In the series finale, the Great Danes captured another one-run win, 4-3, securing the sweep. UAlbany scored all four runs in the fourth inning.  Coming out of the pen for three and two-thirds frames, junior Kevin Archbold (1-0) recorded his first career win, holding the Seawolves to just two hits and two runs (none earned), while tying his career-high with six strikeouts. Redshirt sophomore Stephen Carey earned the save, limiting Stony Brook to one hit, while striking out one in the final two scoreless innings.

In the series, junior Josh Nethaway led UAlbany with a team-best .455 batting average and .727 slugging percentage, logging a home run, three RBI, and four runs scored. The Fonda, N.Y. native crossed the plate and lined at least one hit in each game, including a pair of multi-hit performances, earning America East Player of the Week honors.

The Great Danes take a four-game win streak into today’s non-conference doubleheader at Marist. UAlbany will then return to league play Saturday and Sunday at Binghamton.
