ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany women’s basketball team will tip off the new season with a battle against cross-town rival Siena at the Times Union Center in downtown Albany at 5 p.m. to determine the winner of the Albany Cup.

Student tickets are near-sold out for the game.  Fans are encouraged to call the Times Union Center at 518-487-2000 for tickets.

The Great Danes have won the past three Albany Cup games, including a 65-48 win last season, shooting 60% from the field.  Megan Craig and Lindsey Lowrie each scored a team-best 12 points, adding six rebounds. Tehresa Coles led Siena with 13 points and four steals.  UAlbany will look to tie the all-time series on Friday as Siena currently leads 5-4.

Friday marks the start of the 2013-14 season for all of college basketball.  UAlbany will look for a three-peat after winning the America East the past two seasons.  The Great Danes are coming off their best record in the school’s DI history, going 27-4 with a perfect 16-0 in-conference tally.

In the preseason, Megan Craig and Shereesha Richards were named to the 2013-14 America East Preseason All-Conference Team.  In addition, Richards along with Sarah Royals and Margarita Rosario were elected team captains for the season.  They, along with the other two returners and six newcomers, will look to replace the production of the most talented senior class in UAlbany history that graduated last year.

Cross-town rival Siena is coming off a 13-18 year in the first season under Head Coach Ali Jaques. The Saints went 8-10 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and made the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament, falling to Iona.  The Saints are looking to replace the production of Lily Grenci, who nearly averaged a double double a game last season. The leading returning scorer from last year is junior guard Tehresa Coles, who averaged 9.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game. The team’s primary three-point shooter at 31.1%, senior Clara Sole Anglada, also is the leading returning rebounder at 4.6 boards a contest, scoring 8.8 points a game. At the point is junior Ida Krough, who concluded last season with 76 assists and 5.2 points a game.
