Four Great Danes Receive SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award

ALBANY, N.Y. – Four University at Albany student-athletes have been announced as winners of a 2013-14 SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award. The Great Dane recipients include Kathryn Fanning, Cody Futia, Eric LaPorta, and Viktoriia Stroilo.

The Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award was created to recognize academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement.  Student-athletes are nominated by their campus athletic director and their credentials and accomplishments are then reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from across SUNY as well as the provost’s office. This year, 83 SUNY scholar-athletes were honored.

“SUNY scholar-athletes are stand-out students who have excelled not only in their respective sports but in our classrooms as well,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “With an average GPA of 3.55 among this year’s honorees, we are exceptionally proud of their achievements. Congratulations to each of the students recognized, and thank you to the many professors, coaches, and staff across SUNY who support them.”

Kathryn Fanning (Manlius, N.Y.), a senior standout on the UAlbany cross-country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams, has led the Great Danes to six America East Conference track titles in her tenure. Individually, she is the school record holder in the indoor 1,000-meter run, the indoor one-mile run, and the outdoor 1,500-meter run, and has also set program-bests as a member of the relay teams. Academically, Fanning boasts a 3.98 cumulative GPA in biology and was already honored this spring by SUNY with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. Heading to medical school in the fall, Fanning is currently a researcher at the RNA Institute and a published author in the Journal of Neuroscience.

Cody Futia (Schenectady, N.Y.), a senior defender on UAlbany’s men’s lacrosse team, has earned America East All-Conference Second Team honors the past two seasons and led UAlbany to an America East title in 2013 and an NCAA Tournament berth. With 13 caused turnovers so far this season, Futia and the No. 1-seeded Great Danes will look for their second consecutive NCAA berth this weekend at the conference championship. In the classroom, Futia, stands with a 3.73 GPA in business administration and has earned America East All-Academic Team honors.

Eric LaPorta (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), a senior center on the Great Danes football team, started every game in his final three seasons after beginning his career as a walk-on. He led UAlbany to back-to-back NEC titles and an appearance in the 2011 NCAA FCS Playoffs. A two-time Capital One Academic All-District honoree and 2014 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society member, LaPorta was named three times to the NEC Academic Honor Roll and to the CAA Academic Honor Roll this past season. LaPorta finished his undergraduate tenure with a 3.57 GPA as a dual major in criminal justice and history, and has a 3.74 GPA in his graduate program for secondary education for social studies.

Viktoriia Stroilo (Luhansk, Ukraine), a junior libero on the volleyball team, was named the America East Defensive Specialist of the Year for the second straight season in 2013. She also earned second team all-conference honors and led the America East with 4.96 digs per set in all matches and 5.41 digs per set in conference matches, finishing with a team-best 367 digs and 20 service aces. Academically, Stroilo was named the 2013 America East Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, accruing a 3.74 cumulative GPA in biology.
