Football Adds Aaron Smith And Kevin Ross To Coaching Staff

ALBANY, N.Y. – For the first time since 2010, the University at Albany football team will have fresh faces on the coaching staff. Head Coach Bob Ford has announced the additions of wide receivers coach Aaron Smith and tight ends coach Kevin Ross to the UAlbany program.

“We’re getting two experienced guys coming in to join us,” said Ford. “I believe they will make a positive impact on the program with their extensive football knowledge, work ethics, and attention to detail.”

Smith, a native of West Point, N.Y. and son of an Army colonel, brings seven years of collegiate coaching experience to UAlbany. He spent last season leading the wide receivers at Boston College and the five seasons prior as the receivers coach at Columbia University (2007-11). Smith also served as Columbia’s recruiting coordinator in 2011. He started his coaching career at the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2006.

As an undergraduate, Smith played football at both the University of Maryland and the University of Connecticut, helping his teams to appearances in the Peach, Orange, and Motor City Bowls. While competing at UConn, he was presented with two Scholar Athlete Awards, and graduated with a degree in political science in 2006.

Ross, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, also comes with a military background. The son of former San Diego Chargers and Detroit Lions head coach Bobby Ross, Kevin served as Army’s offensive coordinator for four seasons (2004-07) under his father’s tutelage. Ross also spent time at Virginia, directing the running backs from 2000-03 and helped the Cavaliers to consecutive victories over West Virginia and Pittsburgh in the Continental Tire Bowl.

Prior to accepting a position at Virginia, Ross spent two seasons overseeing wide receivers and assisting with special teams at The Citadel (1999-2000). The Lexington, Va. native also spent time working on the defensive side of the ball at Georgia Tech (1998) and Southwest Texas State University (1997).

A veteran of Operation Desert Storm, Ross served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1988 through 1994, holding duties as a light armored reconnaissance company commander, infantry platoon commander and aviation logistics supervisor. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Navy in 1988 and captained the Mids’ track and field team as a senior.

Smith and Ross replace Akeem Cedeno and Eric Evans on Ford’s staff; Evans is now the running backs coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. They will join Great Dane veterans Ryan McCarthy (OC/QB), Drew Christ (DC/DB), Mike Simpson (LB), Mike Morita (OL), Bill Banagan (DL), Don Mion (LB), Jamie Casullo (RB), and Matt Scott (CB) for the 2013 season.
