Field Hockey Releases 2014 Schedule Featuring Five Nationally Ranked Opponents from 2013

2014 UAlbany Field Hockey Schedule

ALBANY, N.Y.- The University at Albany field hockey team announced its 2014 schedule on Monday, highlighted by five teams that concluded 2013 nationally ranked.

“This year’s schedule should be a challenging one,” said head coach Phil Sykes. “Each year we try to play a challenging nonconference schedule, and this year is no exception. One highlight this year is our trip out west, where we’ll be playing Pacific and Stanford. We have a good combination of teams with a lot success and up-and-coming squads on our schedule.”

The Great Danes kick off 2014 with three-straight home games against Hofstra (Aug. 29), Bryant (Aug. 31) and Ohio State (Sept. 1). UAlbany has a combined record of 8-1 against the Pride and the Bulldogs. UAlbany faces the Buckeyes for the first time since 2010, when the teams met in the NCAA First Round.

Sykes’s squad hits the road for a five-game stretch in September. The Great Danes will stay local with games at Syracuse (Sept. 6) and Cornell (Sept. 7), before traveling to Pacific and Stanford in mid-September. The all-time series against Pacific is tied 1-1, while the Cardinal holds a 1-3 advantage versus the Purple & Gold.

UAlbany continues its schedule against Virginia and Princeton, with both teams likely to be nationally ranked. The Tigers begin a four-game homestand for UAlbany on Sept. 28.

After hosting local rival Siena on Oct. 1, the Great Danes open America East play at Alumni Turf against UMass Lowell on Oct. 4. UAlbany hosts the Patriot League’s Lafayette on Oct. 5.

The Purple & Gold travels to New Hampshire on Oct. 10 in a redemption game from last season. The Wildcats defeated the Great Danes in the America East final last season to earn the league’s automatic NCAA bid in Durham. UAlbany concludes its nonconference schedule at Dartmouth on Oct. 11.

Phil Sykes looks to extend his all-time record against Fairfield to 8-0 on Oct. 18 in Connecticut, before returning to Alumni Turf to host Maine (Oct. 25). The Great Danes wrap up the regular season at Vermont on Halloween.

The conference semifinals will commence on Nov. 6, with the final to be played on Nov. 8.
