The University at Albany football program announced that sophomore wide receiver Dev Holmes will be leaving the team Monday, Sept. 23.

Holmes, an Albany-area native, was suspended for the 36-7 win over Lafayette Saturday for an undisclosed reason.

“Dev informed me today that he has decided to leave the program,” said coach Greg Gattuso. “We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

As a true freshman last season, Holmes led the Danes in catches (50), receiving yards (734) and receiving touchdowns (5). This season he was limited to just six catches for 36 yards and no touchdowns in three games.

The Danes wide receiver group will move forward with senior Juwan Green (28 catches, 408 yards, six touchdowns) and senior Jerah Reeves (21 catches, 196 yards, two touchdowns) leading the charge. Senior Donovan McDonald should see an increased role with Holmes’ departure.

Isn’t this the same guy who committed to Villanova and then later changed his mind?

Yes he is. Holmes tweeted Feb. 1 2018: “After a long talk with my family members and coaches I had to make a hard decision that wasn’t easy and decided to decommit from Villanova University and commit to the University at Albany, I’m #StayingHolmes.”
