Daphne Voormolen Named America East Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year



CAMBRIDGE, MASS.- University at Albany field hockey senior Daphne Voormolen was named the America East Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced on Thursday.

Voormolen, a senior from the Netherlands is a double major in business administration and public health with a cumulative GPA of 3.60. The forward is a two-time All-America East Academic team honoree and America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection. Voormolen was also named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad in 2012.

On the field, Voormolen is a two-time America East Offensive Player of the Year and All-NFHCA Regional selection. She was also named to the All-ECAC Second Team and NFHCA Senior Game team in 2013. Voormolen tops the Division I program leaderboard in career points (117) and goals (48). She scored an all-time single-game high five goals in a 9-0 win over Sacred Heart this past season. The forward scored 15 goals to go with 10 assists in 2013. She was the 2012 America East Tournament Most Outstanding Performer and a four-year All-Conference awardee.

Voormolen is the third Great Dane to be named the league’s field hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Previous UAlbany awardees include Kristi Troch in 2010 and Arlette Westdorp in 2006.

According to the America East, nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport. Then, a committee of athletic administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives chose an honoree in each of the six fall championship sports. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50. They will automatically be eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award to be announced this summer.
