Castro Named To All-Region Team

EUGENE, Ore. – For the first time since the 2011 season, the University at Albany softball team played in the NCAA Tournament, traveling this year to Eugene, Oregon to play in the four-team, double-elimination regional round, against top overall seed Oregon, Big-10 runner-up Wisconsin, and WAC champion Utah Valley.  After losing the opening game to Wisconsin, the Danes earned their third tournament victory in program history, staving off elimination against Utah Valley, avenging a loss to the Wolverines from earlier in the season.  The victory earned UAlbany a rematch with Wisconsin, who proceeded to eliminate the Danes from the tournament.

Oregon defeated Wisconsin in the championship round to advance to Super Regionals.  With the conclusion of the regional round, All-Regional honorees were named based on their performances over the weekend.  Oregon and Wisconsin players made up the majority of the selections, but UAlbany senior Charlise Castro was named as an outfielder as the Danes’ sole representative.

In three games played, Castro hit .333 with two home runs and five RBIs.  Her two home runs were tied for first with two Wisconsin players, Stephanie Peace and Chloe Miller, and her RBI total was tied with Oregon’s Janie Takeda for the regional tournament lead in both categories.

Takeda was named regional MVP.  Miller was named as catcher.  Peace was named as first baseman.  Oregon’s Karine Shaver, Courtney Ceo, and Nikki Udria filled out the infield as second baseman, third baseman, and shortstop respectively.  Joining Castro in the outfield were Takeda, and Wisconsin’s Mary Massei.  Oregon’s Alyssa Gillespie was named as utility player, and Oregon’s Cheridan Hawkins and Karissa Hovinga were named as pitchers.

UAlbany closed the 2014 season with a record of 34-13, with a conference record of 14-3.  The team finished second in the regular season standings in the America East, and went on to win the America East Tournament for the fifth time.
