Carey And Co. Shut Out UMBC, 1-0, In Series Sweep

ALBANY, N.Y. – For the second time this season, the University at Albany baseball team garnered an America East Conference series sweep, as the Great Danes shut out the visiting UMBC Retrievers, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field. In his first career start, redshirt sophomore Stephen Carey (1-0) earned the first win of his career, holding the Retrievers to four scattered hits, while striking out four in seven innings of work. Out of the pen, sophomore Andrew Jaurique and freshman Ryan Stinar combined with Carey for the shutout.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning when senior Nolan Gaige led off with a single through the left side. Gaige stole second and moved to third on senior Greg Muller’s groundout to second, before crossing the plate on sophomore Gordon Madej’s RBI single up the middle.

From there, a pitching duel ensued between Carey and UMBC starter Mike Gomez (1-4). Carey allowed only one hit and faced only three over the minimum in his first five frames on the hill.

Both offenses threatened in the middle innings, as UAlbany had runners advance to third in both the fifth and sixth frames, but Gomez battled his way out. Likewise, UMBC loaded the bases in the sixth, but Carey got out of the jam unharmed.

Jaurique relieved Carey in the top of the eighth with a three-pitch inning, and Stinar came out of the bullpen with a runner on second and one out in the ninth. The freshman forced a groundout to first and the game-ending fly out to left, earning his fifth save of the season.

In the entire three-game series with UMBC, the Great Dane pitching staff and defense were outstanding, as no errors were committed. The pitchers held the opposition to a .129 batting average and boasted a miniscule 0.36 ERA, allowing just one run and 11 hits total.

Offensively, UAlbany outscored the Retrievers 16-1 in the series, amassing 28 hits. Muller led the Danes with two hits (2-for-4) in the weekend finale.

With the victory, UAlbany improved to 20-16-1 overall and 13-8 in conference play, while the Retrievers fell to 11-24 on the season and 5-16 in the America East.

In addition, the win represented Head Coach Jon Mueller’s 299th of his career. Mueller will look to capture the milestone victory Tuesday when the Great Danes play host to Central Connecticut at 3:00 p.m. on Varsity Field.
