Bowen First, Scannapieco Second At Last Chance Meet

Meet Results

BOSTON – While many athletes enjoy a week off between America East Championships and IC4A/ECAC Championships, the University at Albany indoor track program sent two men’s athletes, Alexander Bowen and Alfonso Scannapieco, to Boston to compete in Boston University’s Last Chance Meet.  Both athletes had aspirations of earning a qualifying spot to the national championship meet, and this weekend represented the final opportunity to solidify one’s résumé in that regard.

Bowen won the high jump among a field of four competitors.  Entering the meet his best mark of the season, 7’-2.5”, stood in a tie for 13th in the country.  He jumped 7’-0.25” at the meet, with three failed attempts at 7’-3”.

Scannapieco placed second in the pole vault, in a field of six competitors.  His best mark of 17’-0.25” was tied for 59th nationally.  Scannapieco jumped 16’-0.5” Sunday, failing to clear 17’-0.25” in his three allotted attempts.

Considering indoor nationals takes only 16 athletes per event, Scannapieco’s chances at qualifying have passed.  Bowen’s hopes remain alive where he stands now, but because the top 13 marks in the country encompass 17 athletes, the national field may be narrowed down based on tiebreakers to get to 16.

Next weekend, Bowen and Scannapieco will join their other qualifying teammates at IC4A championships in a return to Boston University’s Track and Tennis Center.  The women’s team will join them at the same facility for ECAC Championships.
