Beyoncé makes history at Coachella, sings with Destiny’s Child, Solange and Jay-Z
The Coachella Music and Arts Festival broke records last weekend with Beyoncé being the first black woman to headline it. Other headliners this year were Eminem and The Weeknd.
The festival takes place every year in April and is known for its Bohemian aesthetic with over 250,000 attendees over two weekends. The festival takes place in Indio, California at the Empire Polo Club, with temperatures that reach 100 degrees this time of year.
Every year, there are headliners for the festival that perform on the main stage and put on an extravagant show. Last year, Beyoncé was set to headline the show.
However, when the singer announced she was pregnant with twins in February 2017 (only two months before the festival), fans were wondering if she was still going to perform.
With Beyoncé wanting to put on a spectacular performance and have nothing holding her back, she announced she would not perform in 2017 but would come back in 2018. Lady Gaga took Beyoncé’s spot as the headliner last year instead.
Beyoncé fans have been waiting over a year for her performance, to the extent that they made a countdown to what they were calling, “Beychella.”
She began the show by walking from the catwalk, wearing an all-black cloak with silver and gold beading that matched her bodysuit and headdress, along with a cane. As she struts down the catwalk, she walked offstage and then appeared at the center atop what looked to be bleachers filled with a marching band and her dancers.
She appeared in a yellow crop top sweatshirt, denim ripped jeans and silver boots, completely different to what she was seen later on. Beyoncé had five different outfit changes during the performance.
The performance lasted over two hours and began with a fan-favorite throwback, with 2003’s “Crazy in Love.”
Each song wasn’t like its original version as they all had a twist to them. For example, she incorporated a marching band and an orchestra to give each song a different sound.
Beyoncé has been in the music business for about 20 years now and had many songs to pick for her Coachella set list. She went with a mixture of throwback songs from her early years and some newer ones that are crowd favorites like, “Single Ladies” and “Drunk in Love.”
The performance has been getting all sorts of attention with many celebrities like Adele, praising the performance’s saying it’s the best she has ever done.
In true Beyoncé fashion, she surprised fans with a few special guests during her performance.
There had been rumors of a Destiny’s Child reunion, like there always is when Beyoncé performs, but this time it happened.
After her performance of “Run the World (Girls),” she disappeared from the stage, then moments later, rose through the stage with Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland by her side.
The trio performed “Lose My Breath,” “Say My Name,” and “Soldier.” Other surprise guests were her husband of 10 years, Jay-Z, who joined her for their song collaboration, “Déjà Vu.” The last guest appearance was her sister, Solange who joined in on a playful dance break of “Got Me Bodied (Timbaland Remix).”
One thing that made this performance so notable was that was never a dull moment onstage. Even when Beyoncé wasn’t present onstage, there were always visuals being displayed or dancers entertaining the crowd. That’s what made the crowd so connected and entertained during the whole performance.
The thing that makes Beyoncé fans so loyal and thriving for more, is Beyoncé’s consistency to put on a good show. Every performance is different from the last and fans are so intrigued to see what she will do next.
There are songs that she has been singing and performing for over two decades, and is still able to make it sound new each time.
Fans can only hope that the “On the Run 2” tour that kicks off this summer with Jay-Z, will be just as good as Coachella 2018.
