LOWELL, Mass. – In Wednesday’s first round of the America East Conference Tournament, the No. 3 University at Albany baseball team slipped to No. 2 Binghamton, 9-0, as Bearcat starter Jake Lambert tossed a two-hit complete-game shutout. The squads endured a 54-minute rain delay to start the contest, facing wet field conditions throughout.

Binghamton took the initial lead in the bottom of the second, as Shaun McGraw lined a one-out double down the left field line and advanced to third when the slick ball got away from left fielder D.J. Hoagboon. Brian Ruby followed with a sacrifice fly to deep right field, bringing in McGraw.

The Bearcats tacked on another run in the third after Bill Bereszniewicz drew a one-out walk and scored on Zach Blanden’s double coupled with another outfield error.

The scoring continued in the fourth, as McGraw sparked a rally with a one-out single to centerfield. Ruby followed with a walk, and an error on a ball hit down the third base line scored McGraw. UAlbany starter Kasceim Graham then issued a walk, and with two outs, plunked back-to-back Bearcats, giving Binghamton a 5-0 lead. Reliever Andrew Jaurique got the Danes out of the jam with one pitch out of the pen, forcing a groundout to second.

In the fifth, errors proved costly for the Danes as they committed four in the frame.  Two errors followed by a McGraw’s single to right-center set up Ruby’s RBI single for the first of three runs in the inning. Another fielding error led to Nick Pancerella’s sac fly. Next, Ruby advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and crossed the plate on an errant throw to the bag, expanding the Bearcat lead to 8-0.

Binghamton crossed the plate again in the sixth, as Jake Thomas was hit by reliever Brendan Ryan’s pitch and Daniel Nevares lined an RBI double to left field, giving the Bearcats a 9-0 advantage.

Lambert (6-2) earned the win, allowing just two infield hits, two walks, while striking out six in nine innings.

Graham (7-5) took the loss, allowing five runs (one earned), three hits, three walks, and struck out three in 3.2 innings of work. Out of the pen, Jaurique tossed 1.1, allowing three runs (none earned), and two hits, while Ryan hurled two frames, allowing a run and a hit. Freshman Sam DeCelle tossed the final inning, setting the Bearcats down in order.

Offensively, Gordon Madej and Brian Bullard recorded the Danes’ pair of hits, while McGraw led Binghamton with a 3-for-4 effort with three runs scored.

No. 3 UAlbany (23-24-1) will now play No. 4 Stony Brook (24-33) at 4:00 p.m. Thursday in the tournament’s first elimination game.
