Baseball Shut Out By Maine, 7-0, In Series Rubbermatch


ORONO, Maine – The hosting Maine Black Bears overcame the University at Albany baseball team, 7-0, in the series rubbermatch Sunday at Mahaney Diamond. With the win, Maine clinched a berth to the America East Conference tournament, improving to 21-26 overall and 8-10 in league play, while the Great Danes fell to 10-32 on the season and 5-16 in the America East.

Starter Joey Moore (0-1) took the loss, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing five runs and seven hits, while striking out three. Out of the bullpen, Ryan Stinar tossed 4.1 frames, allowing two runs (one earned) and three hits, striking out five.

Offensively, UAlbany totaled four hits, led by junior Cory Kingston’s 2-for-3 performance.

Maine took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, stringing together three hits.

In the fourth, the Black Bears tagged UAlbany for four hits and used an error to their advantage to score two runs.

In addition, Maine tacked on two runs in the eighth for a 7-0 advantage.

Starter Scott Heath and reliever Shaun Coughlin (4-5) combined for the shutout. Scott tossed the opening 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, while striking out one. Coughlin earned the win, throwing the final five frames, holding UAlbany to one hit, while striking out two.

Maine finished the game with 10 hits led by Colin Gay’s three knocks.

UAlbany closes the 2014 regular season at home, hosting Binghamton Friday and Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
