America East Men’s Basketball Tournament to be Played at Campus Sites for 2015, 2016

AMERICA EAST RELEASE

CAMBRIDGE, MASS.- The America East Conference announced Thursday that the league tournament will be played at campus sites of the higher seeds beginning in 2015.

“This format will afford more of our campuses the chance to experience the thrill of postseason basketball, while also protecting our strongest teams and giving them the best opportunity to advance to the NCAA tournament with the highest seed possible,” said America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen.

The conference previously used a singular host site for both men’s and women’s tournaments, with each tournament final taking place at the highest remaining seed’s home court. Beginning in 2015, the quarterfinals will take place on four campuses, and the field will be re-seeded for the semifinals.

“The new format protects the higher seeds and rewards teams for regular season success,” said UAlbany head coach Will Brown. “It will also provide four institutions the opportunity to host games and create a March Madness buzz on campus.”

The change was approved in June by conference athletic directors, with the final details ironed out at America East meetings this past week.

The Great Danes won the 2013 America East Championship last year as the No. 4 seed, downing No. 5 Maine and No. 1 Stony Brook on its home floor.

UAlbany will host the 2014 Men’s & Women’s America East Basketball Tournaments at SEFCU Arena, March 7-9.
