Allen, McGarr, Persson Set to Captain 2014 Men’s Soccer Squad

ALBANY, N.Y.- University at Albany men’s soccer head coach Trevor Gorman announced Monday that seniors Tim Allen and Dominic McGarr as well as junior Philip Persson will serve as captains for the 2014 season.

“We’re fortunate to have a lot of experienced players returning with the ability to positively influence our team,” said Gorman. “Dom, Tim and Philip will represent our squad in their role as captains in an excellent manner.”

The Great Danes return nine starters and 14 letterwinners from a 2013 team that reached the America East tournament semifinals. Last season’s squad also earned the program’s first Division I win over a nationally ranked opponent, downing No. 22 Fairleigh Dickinson 2-1 at Bob Ford Field.

Allen joins the captain ranks after serving as the starting goalie the last two seasons. He returns from injury in 2014 with a career goals against average of 1.22 and a save percentage of .803.

McGarr was named a captain for the third straight season. The senior is slated to become the program’s career leader in starts and minutes played. He currently has 58 consecutive career starts to his credit, the most of any player in UAlbany program history.

Persson made 19 starts and 20 appearances in 2013. The midfielder ranks ninth in Division I program history in single season assists with four last season.

The Great Danes open the 2014 season in Harrisonburg, Va., with a pair of games against Appalachian State and James Madison the weekend of Aug. 30. UAlbany returns to Bob Ford Field for a three-game nonconference stretch starting Sept. 5.
