#20 UAlbany Falls to #15 Bucknell, 18-12, in Non-Conference Men’s Lacrosse Action

ALBANY, N.Y. — Despite four goals by Ty Thompson and six total points from Miles Thompson, #20 UAlbany fell to 15th-ranked Bucknell, 18-12, in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at John Fallon Field. The Great Danes drop to 4-3 on the season, after ending a three-game win streak, while the Bison move to 8-1.

Bucknell struck first with an unassisted goal by Peter Burke 2:30 into play. UAlbany responded a minute and a half later with a score by Will Fuller, assisted by Lyle Thompson. The Bison scored the next two before UAlbany netted its second tally of the game, an unassisted shot by Ty Thompson with 5:27 to play, cutting the Bucknell lead to 3-2 at the end of the first period.

The Great Danes scored twice to start the second quarter to take their first lead of the game, 4-3. Miles Thompson took an assist from Eric Cantor to tie the score at 3-all just 12 seconds into the period, while Matt Garziano connected with Will Stenberg who slipped the ball past Bucknell goalkeeper Kyle Feeney to give UAlbany the lead. Bucknell came back to tie the game at 4-4 at 10:59 on a score by Todd Heritage, but Ty and Miles connected at 9:30 to put the Great Danes back on top. UAlbany held a 6-4 lead at the half, after Stenberg scored a man-up goal on an assist from Lyle Thompson with 44 seconds to play.

The teams exchanged goals to start the second half, with UAlbany getting scores from Miles Thompson, Eric Cantor, and Ty Thompson to hold onto a 9-6 advantage with 9:44 to play in the period. Bucknell then exploded for four straight goals to flip the score to 10-9 in the Bisons’ advantage before Miles Thompson ended the stretch with an unassisted tally at 3:30 to tie the game at 10-10. Bucknell scored the final two goals of the third to hold a 12-10 lead heading into the final period.

The Great Danes came out firing, scoring the first two goals of the quarter in under a minute, with tallies by Lyle and Ty Thompson, setting the score at 12-12 with 14 minutes to go. However, Bucknell ended the game on a tear, scoring six straight to end the game and set the final deficit.

Bucknell outshot the Great Danes, 41-35, while UAlbany held a 48-41 advantage in groundball pickups. The teams were close to even in faceoffs, but UAlbany’s Kevin Glueckert won 17-of-33 to give the Great Danes the slight advantage. UAlbany’s Blaze Riorden and Max Huber split time in the cage, each playing a half. Riorden made five saves in the first half, while Huber stopped three shots in the second.

The Great Danes will continue non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Harvard, with face off set for 7 p.m.
