1-Seed UAlbany WBB Takes on Hartford in America East Semifinals on Sunday

ALBANY, N.Y. – 1-seed UAlbany has advanced to the America East Semifinal round and will take on 5-seed Hartford on Sunday, March 9 at the SEFCU Arena at 11 a.m. for a chance to go to the conference finals.  The winner will take on the victor of Stony Brook-New Hampshire in the finals on Monday.

The game will be broadcast online on ESPN3, and tickets for the America East Tournament are still available on ualbanysports.com.

The Great Danes defeated 8-seed Binghamton on Friday 77-59 to earn a place in the semifinals, standing at 26-4 overall and 15-1 in the conference.  Hartford upset 4-seed Maine with a 63-62 overtime victory on the final game on Friday to go to the America East semifinals, coming into the game at 13-17 and 9-7 in the league.

This is a rematch of last season’s America East championship game, with the Great Danes winning 61-52 for last year’s conference title. Hartford leads the overall series 20-12, but UAlbany has won the last six contests, including a 90-68 victory at home on February 7th.

The Great Danes sport three of the top-14 scorers in the league.  America East Player of the Year Shereesha Richards leads the conference with 20.2 points a game, scoring double digits in 28 games.  Fellow All-Conference First Team member Megan Craig, has risen to eighth in the conference at 12.4 points a contest. Sarah Royals is averaging 11.4 points a contest to stand 14th in the league and has 141 assists for a new UAlbany single season record.  UAlbany is #1 in the America East in scoring with 71.9 points a game, scoring margin at +17.0 and field goal % at 47.0%.

Hartford will make its second-consective trip to the America East semifinal round after its defeat of Maine.  The Hawks have won five America East titles under coach Jennifer RIzzotti, the last in the 2010-11 season.The team sports two players from the 2013-14 All-Conference Third Team: junior Amber Bepko is the team’s leading scorer with 10.4 points a game, shooting 38.1% from beyond the arc, while junior forward Cherelle Moore is the squad’s top rebounders at 6.2 boards a contest, averaging 9.3 points a game.  Freshman Morgan Lumb was named the America East Sixth Player of the Year, averaging 7.5 points a game.
